MEET our T3 JUNE ATHLETE of the MONTH, Mara Fronhofer!

Q: What is your name and where do you live?

A: Mara Fronhofer, Cossayuna, NY

Q: What is your age?

A: 41, O.K. almost 42. Does it really matter?

Q: What is your occupation?

A: Teacher

Q: How long have you been participating in triathlons?

A: I did my first (road) race on my mountain bike 10 years ago. I didn’t race again until almost 7 years ago and I’ve been gung ho for the last 4 years.

Q: How long have you been coached by Kevin Crossman?

A: 3 Years.

Q: What is your favorite race, and why?

A: I don’t really have a favorite. I’d like to say that the XTERRA Worlds is my favorite because the location is so beautiful, but there’s nothing real fun about that race. If I had to choose, I’d say the XTERRA East Championship. It’s a fun and challenging course.

Q: What is your favorite piece of triathlon equipment?

A: My Serotta CXII.

Q: What are some of your career highlights as an athlete (not necessarily triathlon)?

A: Getting my blackbelt in Karate was an accomplishment. As a triathlete: winning my age group by 20 minutes at Xterra East and qualifying for Worlds. Racing at Xterra World’s was a great experience!

Q: What are your triathlon goals for the 2008 season?

A: I would like to get a half PR at Moosman. My main goal is finishing and doing well in Ironman Lake Placid.

Q: What is your long-term goal in the sport of triathlon?

A: I don’t have any long term goals right now. I might want to concentrate on Olympic distances next year, I haven’t done many of those.

Q: What are 3 foods someone would always find in your refrigerator/cupboards?

A: Ice cream, cheese, and peanut butter. Why do you think I train?

Q: Do you specialize in a particular triathlon distance? If so, why that distance?

A: When ever I’m doing a sprint I wish it was a half so I didn’t have to go balls out the whole time and whenever I do a half I wish it was a sprint so it was over quicker. I really like all distances and am not sure which I do best in.

Q: What advice would you give to a 'newbie' in the sport?

A: Find a training partner, its more fun that way. Pick a veteran triathlete’s brain for tips. Have fun!

Q: Do you have any secret training tips? (Not really secret if you share, huh?)

A: Train with people better with than you.

Q: Please list your favorite workout:

A: Anything I can do with my husband or a friend. The Roubaix course is always fun, not really, but it’s a great workout. And for a winter workout, Coach Crossman’s disco spin class.

Q: Any thoughts you want to share?

A: Don’t let the sport run your life (easier said than done). You can be a triathlete and still have lots of "fun"!
